What is Not All Sheep Need Shearing About?

Fluffy the Sheep is afraid to get sheared…the problem is, he really needs it! So when he escapes his farm, he decides he’ll just get rid of all that itchy wool himself — resulting in some hilarious situations.

Along the way, he gains a friend and protector in Scruffy, a wild sheep who roams the highlands and is really not quite sure what to do with Fluffy and his antics.

Meet Fluffy

Fluffy is young and, how do we say this nicely? Full of energy. He’s adventurous and willing to try just about anything, up to and including leaping into the sea and attempting to get small birds to pluck out his wool.

Meet Scruffy

Scruffy is a wild sheep who’s seen it all. Nothing much bothers him, and he knows where all the watering holes and grazing areas are. He’s not exactly sure how he wound up shepherding Fluffy around, but he’s doing his best to look after him.

Behind Fluffy and Scruffy

Fluffy and Scruffy are based on actual sheep! Fluffy is inspired by the Lincoln Longwool, an old English breed with roots stretching back to the medieval era. Yes, the Longwools really do have long, lustrous coats and fabulous bangs.

Scruffy is inspired by the Soay sheep, the word “Soay” being a derivative of the Old Norse word for Sheep Island. Now, we know what you’re thinking: That Soay sheep looks like a goat! And yeah, the Soay, with its magnificent horns and shorter fleece, does look more like our modern idea of a mountain goat than a sheep. But they are indeed sheep, and a very old breed of sheep at that.

So... DO all sheep need shearing?

No, they don’t!

Many sheep breeds (including the Lincoln Longwool) have been bred over the years to grow wool continuously and need regular shearing. Breeds like the Soay shed their wool on their own.
